Study of wear and micropitting in rolling/sliding contacts operating under boundary lubrication conditions

Rolling contact fatigue is a common failure mode in gears and bearings. However, this getting greater attention due to the increasing tendency use lower viscosity lubricants reduce losses. Though several types of research have been done over past decades, there are still scopes for further investigations. This study aims effect slide roll ratios (SRR), surface roughness treatment on wear pitting behaviour under realistic conditions. Fatigue damages were quantified by studying topography alteration at different cycle intervals. It was found that boundary lubrication, initiation micropitting took place almost all test runs. once adhesive mechanism activated higher cycle, initially formed micropitted area started wipe off. Moreover, an extended period high sliding, volume similar irrespective SRR. Later, studied, which effective delaying improving tribological parameters compared untreated samples.
